DIY - Denim Big Ruffle Dress

This dress is completely self-drafted.
The typhoon has gone, so the hot summer is coming back. Recently, I've been making pre-made patterns but I wanted to design a dress myself. The denim dress with the off-the shoulder feature has big ruffle trims along that collar, sleeves and pockets. I used lightweight denim. This dress is a size small- medium, but the sizing is very forgiving.

It's similar to "Ninja Dress (here's the review)" that I have made last year. It's self-drafted too. I love the pattern and made some dresses and tunics from it. These bodice patterns are almost the same. If you are interested in Big Ruffle Dress, just try it! It doesn't need a lot of fabric and a zipper. Quick and easy to sew.

👇👇👇How to make flared parts

※Clicking on these images will take you to the full-size.

I think the most difficult part was making the slit pockets. If you can't make slit pockets, they can be omitted. I attached stay tape along the seams of the pockets. I recommend that you use stay tape or interfacing. Otherwise, the pocket opening opens formlessly from the weight of the frill.
I absolutely love this dress; especially the flared sleeves and collar are lovely. If you have a raglan bodice pattern with a loose-fitting design, you can use that. All you have to do is attach the flared sleeves and shoulder elastic casing to the bodice parts. The sleeve pattern can also be used in a jumpsuit. I'm thinking about making a jumpsuit with beige linen. I really love jumpsuits but sometimes think it's too much of a hassle to wear one. However, an off-the shoulder jumpsuit is easy to take on and off.

It's a creative and unique pattern. It took a lot of time to draw the patterns, but I think it was worth the time spent on it. I will make it again.

Fabric: 60" 2yd
Total time spent: 13 hours

Some good news! I am so glad that my favourite blogger Alex (Sewrendipity) created a post "Around the World with 5 Inspirational Bloggers & Instagramers" on Sewcialists. Five sewing bloggers (me too!) were featured on it. Who is inspires you? That's a tough question to answer. Ummm...
Next! Lovely sewing blogger El (Elovedra.com) shared 4 blogger's jumpsuits on her blog. My blog post was featured on it: 4 DIY and Sewn Military / Utility Jumpsuits. Please check it😺

Thank you ladies!

Another dress of yours that I love! First, jeans fabrics, who doesn't like it. ^^*~~ Second, the comfortable shape and those flares that make it so unique! Great job! I bet it's a nice thing to wear in the Summer heat. We've had some over 30 degrees days in Poland too recently (interwoven with some storms and heavy rains!), I also keep wearing loose dresses to keep me breezy. *^o^*

  9. This is a beautiful dress. I love how the denim flows in the ruffles. I don't usually think of denim as having softness to it, but it really stands out here in a lovely architectural kind of way and the added topstitching makes it sing! Congratulations on being featured--I'm personally glad I found you on IG! You are an inspiration for sure!

  17. Cute dress, and a nice design! My favorite part is the ruffled collar. I didn't think it has sleeves at all - it looks like something sleeveless with a big collar. Very clever!
